INTERNET
With the advent of the Internet and wireless communications, the way we live our lives has changed drastically over the last three decades. The Internet has come with its positives and negatives. Sadly the laws of the land has not kept pace with this new technology and in many cases when it is misused, the investigating officer does not even know under which law the offender should be charged. It is necessary for the laws to be looked at with a view of making the necessary amendment to existing laws or make new laws where it is needed. The protection of our children should be of major concern to us all. The Internet is awash with websites covering pornography, nudity, academic fraud, illegal drugs, alcohol, hate, discrimination and tastelessness. There are also chat sites which can pose a danger to our children and adults by persons who try to lure them away or to get them engage in unhealthy activities. Serious steps must be taken to prevent children from having access to these sites as many of them are unable to discern what is real or fake and make the best choice. Instead they are influenced by what they see and start to behave accordingly. In the case of chat sites, children must be educated of the possible dangers of communicating with persons that they do not know and be discouraged from ever meeting them in person without their parent or guardian approval. Where the rights of adults to view these sites and the steps necessary to protect our children from viewing them are in conflict, the protection of our children must take priority. Courses will be taught at all levels in our schools on the proper uses of the Internet. There must also be penalties for persons and Internet providers who allow or fail to take the proper steps to prevent children from having access to these sites. Parents, guardians and anyone who provide children with access to the Internet must learn how to use the parental control facilities to prevent children accessing these sites. Steps must also be taken to prevent cyber bullying and limit what can be posted on video and picture sharing sites such as YouTube especially where it relates to other persons. Many persons lives have been ruin by the activity of others posting thing such as personal photos and videos on the Internet. Persons need to know that they cannot hide behind the walls of anonymity as every location has an IP (internet protocol) address and each device has an IP and a MAC (Media Access Control) address which can be used to find them. The efforts to lower the cost of internet service and to make it more widely available across the island will be continued.
