ENERGY

Energy policies are the actions governments take to affect the demand for energy. The  uncertainty in the cost and supply of fuel make it very important for us to look toward renewable and cheaper sources of energy. Too often there is a push toward it when the cost of fuel goes up but goes away once the price has dropped. Cheaper and more sustainable forms of energy must be pursued regardless of   the cost of oil. The push to replace older generating units  with newer ones which are more efficient and uses cheaper and cleaner fuel will be continued. The use of solar energy for heating and the generation of electrical energy will be encouraged. As such, a JAP government will look at the duties which are being charged with a view to lower them where possible. The  expansion of generation of electricity by wind turbines for the national grid will be pursued. Hydro-electricity will also be looked at to see how it’s use can be expanded. The high  cost of energy is one of the major issue facing manufacturers and greatly affect their competitiveness both locally and overseas. The revival of the rail service in the long term must be a part of the plan for the transportation of passengers and freight. Transportation by rails is much more cost effective and uses less fuel than when done by road. It also prevents the clutter of traffic and wear and tear of our roads. A JAP government will start looking at rail corridors and start reserving lands for this expansion. Conservation must play a great part in the energy policy of any country. There will be an ongoing extensive education of the public on ways in which energy can be conserved in our homes and businesses with a view of reducing the energy demands of the  country. Simple things like cleaning filters or making sure that door seals are working properly can see significant savings in the amount of energy consumed.
Increasing the efficiency of equipment and appliances will help to cut the country’s demand for energy. Jamaica electrical grid operates on a 50Hz cycle but most of the equipment and appliances entering the country are from the USA and are designed to operate on a 60Hz cycle. This leads to them wasting vast amount of energy as heat and the shortening of their life. A study will be done to see how this problem can be best addressed. The demand for motor vehicles is driven up by the poor public transportation system existing throughout the country. Most of our towns are now clogged daily with motor vehicles as the road infrastructure was never designed for such a large volume of traffic. JAP will work to provide a reliable public transportation system throughout the country, using vehicles with adequate seating capacity so as to decrease the number of vehicles on our roads thus reducing our energy demands.
